Boneset is native to meadows and marshlands of eastern North America. It is a perennial herb, with an erect stout, cylindrical hairy stem, 2 to 4 feet tall. The lance-shaped leaves are large, opposite, united at the base so as to seem perforated by the stem, 4 to 8 inches long (the lower ones being the largest) with finely toothed edges. Terminal gray-white flower clusters sit on finely branched stems. Boneset’s odor is slightly aromatic, the taste astringent and strongly bitter. It flowers from July to September. Aerial parts of this herb are used to treat viral infections such as colds, flu and fever. The name comes from its ability to treat fevers that accompany broken bones. It is also used for arthritic and rheumatic pain, bacterial infections and some skin conditions.
