September 2003: Echinacea

Echinacea: September Plant of the Month at Tree Frog Farm

EchinaceaAs I look out over the Labyrinth Garden, I see mostly fading shades of brown and green, except for the echinacea. Echinacea purpurea, commonly known as purple coneflower, is a beautiful large pinkish purple daisy-like flower. Butterflies and bees do their pollen dance on the vibrant yellow orange center that matures into a cone shape. Echinacea likes well-drained soil and full to partial sun.

In addition to being a beautiful early fall color addition to any garden, echinacea is known for its medicinal qualities. It is an immune stimulant that increases overall resistance to disease, treats early phases of bacterial or viral infection and speeds the cycle of a cold, flu or upper respiratory infection. It is also an anti-inflammatory treatment for wounds and insect bites. Echinacea is a wonderful plant to have in your garden.

On the flower essence level, echinacea has described itself as follows:

Impulses letting go of old self-images that stagnate your energies and create dis-ease. Supports transition to new ways of being as you interface with your daily world.

I AM melting away of old self-images to reveal the wealth that is your true Self.

Most often my clients or I will get an intuitive check for echinacea flower essence when we are in a transition time. If we are caught in the push/pull between the old and the new, it creates disease, which can weaken our immune system. Echinacea has been my continuing ally this last month as more people are starting to work here, and the business and I are growing into new levels of being “out in the world.” A major self-image shift is occurring. I am grateful for echinacea’s loving assistance.
