Cooley’s Hedge Nettle is native to the US Pacific Northwest Coast. In the mint family, it has square stems to 5 feet tall with coarsely toothed, fuzzy grey-green leaves and a strong pungent scent. It is a prolific ground cover that prefers moist to wet soils. It grows at low elevations along lakeshores, stream banks or forest edges, and in marshes or moist meadows. The bright pink-to-purple tubular flowers attract hummingbirds. Medicinally, indigenous peoples used Cooley’s hedge nettle tea as a spring tonic, to cure boils and for rheumatism. Young stems were eaten and nectar sucked from the flowers.
