Medicinal, Food & Wildlife Qualities:

Skunk cabbage, also called swamp lantern, is native to swampy areas, wet meadows and wet forests of the North American Pacific Coast.  It is in the Araceae family, and like its central North American cousin, Symplocarpus foetidus, it has a fleshy rizome, consisting mainly of stem tissue.  The skunk smell attracts insects that pollinate the tiny flowers packed on a central spike that is hooded by a large yellow bract.  Unlike Symplocarpus foetidus that was used, and continues to be used, extensively for respiratory problems, Pacific Northwest skunk cabbage was used to line berry picking baskets, drying racks and cooking pits. Rarely was it used for food or medicine because it contains needle-like crystals of Calcium oxalate that can cause intense irritation and burning in the digestive tract. However, after steaming or roasting, leaves and root were eaten mostly as a famine food.
