Western Starflower is a beautiful ground cover plant that often clumps around the base of trees. Elliptic-shaped leaves, usually 4 to 8, grow in a whorl around the top of the 3 to 4 inch thin stem. White to pink star-shaped flowers with 5 to 9 petals float on tiny stalks over the leaves. Starflower is also called Indian potato because indigenous coastal people ate the small firm rhizomes.
