Earth Day, Every Day!
It’s so simple! There are so many opportunities to serve each other and our Mother Earth. “Such pie in the sky,” some say. “Just look at what happened at the Boston Marathon.” Our hearts go out to those who were killed or wounded and their families. Things like the bombing at the end of the race can easily shock us into numbness. Still as the American author and journalist Hal Borland said, “…we know that though a thousand things may be wrong, a million things are right.” So let’s focus on what beauty we can create.
Here are a few ideas for honoring each other and our beautiful blue green Mother Earth.
- Reduce, Reuse Recycle, Restore
- Grow food in your yard; on a deck, patio, balcony; in a community garden
- Use green energy as much a possible
- Buy local or free trade and organic as much as possible
- Participate in micro loans. Resources: Book, The International Bank of Bob, by Bob Harris. Kiva, a micro finance organization
- Volunteer or work for environmental/social justice causes
- Participate in Earth Day and Earth Month activities
- Interact with children with love
- Help out a neighbor or friend
- Do something imaginative. One example is earth art as sophisticated as Andy Goldsworthy creates or as simple as building a garden fence with tree limb trimmings. There are many famous earth artists. Andy Goldsworthy is my favorite. This YouTube of him is an excerpt from a longer documentary.

Salal Flower Essence
Salal is a common understory shrub in the North American Pacific Northwest coniferous forests. Salal was an important food source for many First Peoples of the area. The dark juicy berries were eaten both fresh and dried into cakes. Salal berries were used to sweeten other foods and to thicken salmon eggs. Sometimes they were traded or sold, usually in combination with other native berries. These days, salal berries make a wonderful jam.
On the flower essence level, Salal helps you to remember that you are spirit having a human experience. That what you do is much less important than how you do it.
