Mid-August 2018: Autumn Is in The Air

Autumn started on July 27th. That was the first day I woke up to the sound of fog horns from boats on the Salish Sea (Puget Sound). Early this year! There are other signs, too. The sound of alder tree leaves has changed from summer’s soft swishing melody to a brittle rustling sound as they drift to the ground. Maple leaves are turning shades of yellow and red. Garden vegetables are ripening, and breezes are getting cooler. However, summer still has a foothold. Smoke from forest fires in the Washington Cascade Mountains and in British Columbia, Canada settled in for almost a week to give us beautiful red sunsets and challenges breathing. This is the transition time. Mornings feel like fall and afternoons feel like summer. Sometimes my body gets confused and ungrounded.
