I’m sitting outside on an oak rocking-bench. It’s a bright sunny summer-like day on May 1st, May Day, mid-spring. What a wonderful treat!! Knowing it won’t continue, but enjoying this beautiful moment. This land is special, lush and green from all of the rain. Golden dragonflies and orange butterflies float by. The sound of birds in the woods fills the air. (There are around 20 varieties of birds that nest here because of the abundant food and habitat.) A cool breeze floats in from the water to the west of our little island. A quiet paradise. Hard to convey this in photos, but perhaps it will come through.

John bought this land in 1975. We met in Boulder, Colorado in 1996 and came to Lummi Island together the summer of 1999. Each year, each season, I feel the quiet beauty of this land seeping deeper into my body, mind and heart. This kind of wisdom from the Earth herself has been incubating. At first it expressed itself as the Earth Keeper Essence Blend. That felt resonant for a time. The last couple of years, however, I’ve sensed something about that blend needed to change. This year it did.

Introducing Earth Wisdom Essence Blend! The tone is more resonant with the magnificent potential of our time. Many of the essences are different and some new stones have been added. It is powerful, it is gentle, and it is motivating to live in harmony with our Earth Mother and all of her children. Salal Flower Essence was a key essence in Earth Keeper and continues that in Earth Wisdom. Cottonwood Tree Essence is one of the new essences that uplifts our spirits and calls us to live in harmony with all of Mother Earth’s children. These are both featured essences during May.

Salal Flower Essence

Salal is a very common understory shrub in the North American Pacific Northwest coniferous forests. It grows from sea level to middle elevations, sometimes forming impenetrable thickets. Salal was an important food source for many First Peoples of the area. The dark juicy berries were eaten both fresh and dried into cakes. Salal berries were used to sweeten other foods and to thicken salmon eggs. Sometimes they were traded or sold, usually in combination with other native berries. These days, salal berries make a wonderful jam.

On the flower essence level, Salal helps you to remember that you are spirit having a human experience. That what you do is much less important than how you do it. Whether you are a fireman, nurse, yoga teacher, environmental activist, mother or meditation teacher, the way you feel yourself, the way you connect with your inner spirit is vital to the quality of what you contribute to others. It is also vital to your light-hearted sense of wellbeing and spiritual process. Cottonwood Tree Essence

Cottonwood Trees are native to Western North America and grow in moist to swampy sites at low to medium elevations. They can grow to over 100 feet tall and live as long as 400 years. The flower catkins bloom before the heart-shaped leaves open. Leaf buds are sticky with a fragrant resin that makes a wonderful antiseptic salve, and has been used historically for everything from gum to glue and waterproofing. Seeds are covered with white fluffy hairs, giving cottonwood tree it’s name.

On the flower essence level, Cottonwood Tree Essence encourages you to grow the Tree of Love by connecting your roots that grow deep in the swampy waters of your unloved emotions with the warmth and Love of the Sun.
