Fires, Hurricanes and Earthquakes, Oh My!
My heart goes out to everyone affected by fires, hurricanes, tropical storms and earthquakes. I’ve been in touch with several customers who live in these areas to see how they are doing. Haven’t heard back from a few yet. The photo is from a Carolinas Credit Union on sending disaster relief to people effected by Hurricane Irma.
We’ve had thick layers of smoke here in Northwestern Washington, first from fires in British Columbia and later from fires in eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana. Rugged 1000-foot Lummi Mountain, at the south end of Lummi Island close behind Tree Frog Farm, has also been a tender box after many months of no rain. Gratefully, we recently had a day of much needed rain that cleared the smoke here and lessened the chance of fire on the mountain. Unfortunately, it did not reach the fires across the Cascade Mountains in eastern Washington.
And it’s not over yet. There are hundreds of fires burning in the western US and, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, 10 new large fires where reported yesterday. Hurricane Jose is tracking toward the US East Coast and may impact that region next week. In the last week earthquakes have been reported in central California; southeastern Idaho; northwestern British Columbia; the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of the Northern Marina Islands; Chiapas in Mexico; and Japan. Plus one in the north Atlantic between Canada, Greenland, Iceland and Ireland. What an intense time it is!
Although these may be necessary for Earth to clear and heal herself, the destruction can be devastating for people, animals and plants. And heart wrenching for all of us.
